The fire that knew what it was doing
In 2019, the Karuk Tribe of northern California won a landmark agreement to resume cultural burning — deliberate low-intensity fires to manage undergrowth and prevent catastrophe. They had been burning for a thousand years. The government outlawed it in the early twentieth century. A hundred years of suppression produced precisely what the Karuk had been preventing: massive fuel loads and the mega-fires that cost California $149 billion between 2017 and 2021. The traditional practice turned out to be ecologically superior to the modern policy that replaced it.
Four thousand miles east, a different tradition was under pressure. In rural India, child marriage — defended for generations as continuity, honor, necessity — was challenged by activists documenting its consequences: girls pulled from school at twelve, dead in childbirth by sixteen. The word tradition
covered both.
The fence
Chesterton wrote that you should never tear down a fence until you understand why it was built. The conservers take this as foundational. But a women’s rights lawyer who has watched foot-binding, coverture, and child marriage each defended as sacred will tell you: sometimes the fence was built to keep someone out. Knowing why is the reason to tear it down.
The dialecticians lose patience with both camps. Christmas began as a Roman solstice festival, was absorbed by Christianity, banned by Puritans, reinvented by Victorians, and commercialized by the twentieth century. The tradition survived because it kept changing. A Jesuit sees a familiar error on every side. Tradition is not a museum. It is a living conversation — and the conversation includes its own reform mechanism.
The tiebreaker
The Karuk burning case is a live experiment. By 2030, California will have data on whether reintegrated indigenous fire management reduces wildfire severity at landscape scale. If it works alongside modern calibration — GPS, satellite monitoring — the dialecticians gain ground. The fence was real. The question is whether anyone still knows how to read the operating manual.
