New to cosmology

A grain of rice

The Hubble Deep Field contains approximately 3,000 galaxies in a patch of sky the size of a grain of sand held at arm’s length. Each galaxy holds roughly 100 billion stars. The observable universe contains at least 200 billion galaxies.

We find this genuinely, physically awe-inspiring. We resent being told the awe requires a supernatural explanation.

When a theist says God created the universe, they are packaging an enormous unsupported claim inside a familiar syntax. Subject, verb, object. It sounds like an explanation. It is a restatement of the mystery wearing the costume of an answer.

We take the mystics’ reports seriously — more seriously than the theists often do. The experiences are real neurological events. Parietal lobe deactivation during deep meditation produces boundary dissolution. Temporal lobe stimulation has produced mystical states in laboratory conditions. None of this means the experiences are insignificant. It means they are natural. The sunset is not less beautiful because we understand atmospheric refraction.

The theists point to the meaning crisis as evidence secularism fails. We point to the history of theism as evidence that meaning purchased through supernatural belief is meaning purchased on credit. Scandinavia has the highest reported well-being and lowest religiosity on earth. They replaced God with healthcare, social trust, and a culture that treats uncertainty as a feature of adult life.

The process theologians interest us. Whitehead’s God is not the interventionist deity we reject. But a God that does not pray back, does not answer in the night, does not know your name — at some point, redefining a term until everyone accepts it is not clarification. It is equivocation.

Where we concede ground: We haven’t built the cathedral. Our awe is private. The vulnerable prayer does something we can’t.

What would change our mind: Intentional consciousness with causal effects on physical systems irreducible to known interactions — clean enough to need a new framework.
