Coffee v Black Tea

New to mental health

To preface this- I love coffee. I have strong opinions about good coffee and know the best spots in Austin. When I visit a new city, I look for the best coffee shops as part of my tourist agenda. I can make the perfect french press.

Alas, I switched from drinking coffee in the morning to black tea on Sep 8, 50 days ago.

I’ve had 1 coffee per day before 11 am for years, and a month ago, I decided to switch over to black tea to attempt to remedy anxiety and the afternoon crash I was regularly experiencing. The biggest driving factor was my intuitive sense that it was time, and I’m sure many personal stories and science-backed perspectives influenced my intuition.

There was an immediate positive impact. I no longer experience energy crashes. I feel a greater ability to focus. My digestive health improved. Even though I was already sleeping well, my sleep has gotten even better!

Over the past three weeks, I’ve tried drinking coffee three times to see what would happen- a latte, a cold brew, and a drip coffee today.

All the symptoms came back on the days that I drank coffee! Though drip coffee with cream had the least impact, while cold brew was probably the worst.

This experiment has been such a bummer. 😹 No more coffee for me, for real. I think I’ll continue to drink one every now and again when it’s the only thing available or as a treat on days when I don’t have obligations.

Who else has cut coffee? What did you replace it with? What was the impact?
