Three hundred and fifty-nine years
Galileo spent his last nine years under house arrest for describing what he saw through a telescope. The institution that confined him did not formally acknowledge he was right until 1992. That is not a footnote in the debt story. That is the story.
The university was a Church institution. It was also, for most of its history, an instrument of doctrinal enforcement. The theology faculty at Paris condemned 219 propositions in 1277, including several from the Aristotle the civilizational inheritors celebrate. Academic freedom was not a gift from the Church. It was extracted from it by people the Church tried to silence.
The Christian roots
narrative works by selection. It claims Aquinas but not Torquemada. It claims the hospital but not the witch trial. It claims universal dignity but omits that for fifteen centuries the institution preaching it held slaves, burned heretics, and excluded women from the tradition it now takes credit for.
The complexity historians are our closest allies on the history. Where we diverge is the normative question. They want to give proper credit to each tributary. We ask whether the concept of civilizational debt is coherent at all. A surgeon does not owe a debt to the first person who used a knife. Ideas, once loosed, belong to everyone who develops them. The concept of dignity may have roots in Christian theology. It also has roots in Stoic philosophy, Buddhist ethics, and the lived experience of every enslaved person who knew they were human before any theologian confirmed it.
The meaning-crisis argument: the premodern world was not a garden of fulfillment. It was a world where meaning was answered for you by authorities who would punish disagreement.
Where we concede ground: We demolished the cathedral and built an efficient hospital, then were surprised when people felt homeless.
What would change our mind: If the religious element were shown causally necessary — not merely present, but irreplaceable — for the intellectual achievements.
