Ted Bundy was a calculating predator who stole lives, shattered families, and left unanswered questions that haunted investigators for decades.
Now, 52 years after Melissa Ann Smith was murdered, modern DNA technology has helped investigators formally identify him as her killer, but let us be clear about what this means: the case was not solved by speculation, internet rumors, or Bundy’s own manipulative confessions.
It took preserved evidence, modern forensic testing, and investigators willing to reopen a case that had outlived many of the people who fought to solve it. The hard truth is that Melissa’s family died without seeing this day, and no amount of scientific progress can give them back the years stolen from them.
The evidence also has limits, and officials have not released every detail of the DNA comparison, so the remaining Utah cases must be investigated individually rather than casually dumped into Bundy’s record.
