In 399 BCE Athens executed Socrates for asking too many questions, then spent twenty-four centuries ashamed of it. That pairing says more about what we mean by the West
than any reading list: a civilization that kills its best philosopher and cannot stop putting itself on trial for the crime.
We are not naive about the ledger. The tradition that built the Parthenon also built Auschwitz. We know — because the tradition is what taught us to know. The tools category critics use to dismantle the concept, universal ethics and the demand that power justify itself, are the West operating as designed. Not because Europeans alone can think. Because a specific cluster of institutions — universities, independent courts, constitutional structures — turned self-criticism into a permanent habit instead of an occasional mood.
The critics say the word dates to 1919. The word scientist
dates to 1833. Thucydides interrogating power and Madison designing the checks against it are doing something recognizably continuous. The thread is not the gene pool. It is the method: conjecture, criticism, revision, repeat — the loop that also produced the scientific method.
The christian inheritors insist the engine was faith, not reason. Our answer is that the genius was learning to run the argument between faith and reason without either side winning for good. That unfinished argument is the tradition.
Where we concede ground: The phrase gets hijacked by people whose actual commitment is racial hierarchy in a toga.
What would change our mind: Evidence the self-correcting institutional loop arose independently, with equal durability, in several unrelated traditions.
