What if Tariffs Are a Good Thing?
I was surprised to find that this podcast made me wonder whether tariffs would actually be really good for the US economy and, more importantly, for midd-class American people.... Economic Class is the biggest discrimination factor today?
Back in my 20s, I used to read Paul Graham and bought into the whole entrepreneur is a magical wizard that takes disproportionate risks and deserves all the wealth and equity they receive. But, that assumed a good social safety net and level playing field.... Mechanism Design for Harm Reduction
I’ve just posted a new paper on SSRN: Mechanism Design for Harm Reduction: Game Theory and Social Choice for Carceral MOUD and Recovery Institutions 👉 Read it here: https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=6173484 The core question: Why do our institutions so often... The Open Question April 8: How do you determine what something's worth?
Hey y'all! This week's open question: How do you determine what something's worth? SpaceX is targeting a valuation of $1.75 trillion. Bhutan measures success by happiness instead of GDP. Close friends of mine are weighing career ambitions against time with their kids...... - Paulleverich...
Natalism
The natalism debate often sounds like four different conversations happening in the same room. One group looks at declining birth rates and sees a long-term civilizational challenge.... Race and IQ
I recently got dinner at a hole-in-the-wall asian spot with a geneticist named Razib Khan. Over noodles, and with a concerned glance over his shoulder, he admitted that the science is clear: race is absolutely tied to IQ. Jews are the smartest.... - johnky...
Who Really Benefited from the Pandemic Housing Boom?
The housing debate often frames investors as the villains of Australia’s affordability crisis. It is easy to point to negative gearing, cheap credit and capital gains concessions and conclude that speculators drove the pandemic bubble and pocketed the windfall.... - Eric Stevens...
An Introduction
My name is Eric Stevens I want to be clear about who I am and why I am here. I recently published my book, Evolution Mine: Genesis. You can read it for free here: https://nowweevolve.com/view-the-book I made it free on purpose. The idea matters more than the money.... - Kevinnj...
May I see Your ID Please.
AT the top,l et me say I pride myself as being what I call a common sense Centrist, I think good governance is good governance simple as that. I think Its Good for Gvt to defend our country, pave our roads, help people recover from disaster, provide Limited help to people who... In Australia we have compulsory voting. You get fined if you don’t vote. I think that came from a belief that we’re pretty apathetic and might not engage with the system otherwise. This isn’t always a clear win.... The pros/cons of alarmism are interesting. I think that if the argument is framed as "global warming is fake" or "it’s too late we’re fucked", the reaction is the same: indifference, inaction.... yeah I love this. I think we actually agree on many things here, and I touched on a lot of this in my replies to Blake elsewhere in this thread, eg. one of the most basic functions of government is to outsource violence so no one has to do it as a matter of course.... - johnky...
I prefer to think of IP law as a system designed to incentivise the creation and dissemination of works that are valuable to others. I've never been comfortable with the framing that its primary function is to grant authors or inventors “moral rights” over their work, as though... PS: apologies if my words were a bit harsh, I see that your questions were well intended and sincere. It's great to try to find nuance and to understand different perspectives, but that falls short when assessing the impact of this concrete policy.... This makes a lot of sense. Do you have any thoughts about how politicians might make the sell to reduce the deficit? or any examples of people who have done this in the past? I also wonder suddenly if you have thoughts on whether or not this impacts income inequality.... - stephen...
How do we realign the incentives in Healthcare to actually support wellbeing?
Currently, there are many conflicts of interest and misaligned incentives in the Western medical system. For example, Doctors by default "fight" for their patients to live as long as possible, even when that’s not what might actually benefit the patient’s overall wellbeing (or... - yurio...
Who am I to decide?
California General Election is here and once again I’m asked to decide the fate of a few propositions which I believe I’m in no position to make decisions on. For example, Prop 2 an 4 are asking for $10B of debt each to fund various important things.... - Shera JoyCry...
Wanting to help with the LA fires
Write posts in my head often and do not actually write them. There is some block on having a good idea and believing it's worth sharing and then not actually sharing it.... - johnky...
Key Reasons Taxing Unrealised Gains Is Problematic
Liquidity Problems: Taxpayers may not have the cash to pay tax on gains they haven’t actually received. Both mitigation and remediation measures incur additional costs for taxpayers that are not captured as tax revenue to the government (for example, fees and interest on...
