War aims
In 1919 Columbia University built a course called War Aims.
Twenty million people had just died in the First World War, and the university needed to tell returning veterans what they had fought for. The next year it was renamed Contemporary Civilization.
Within a few decades the same road ran through American syllabi everywhere: Athens, Rome, the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, Philadelphia in 1787. The phrase Western civilization
entered the curriculum not as a discovery but as a course designed in wartime.
That origin is the case for the prosecution. But a label being young does not make the thing it names fake. Biology
was coined in 1800; cells are older.
What’s in the library
Pull one book off the shelf and the lineage looks undeniable. Thucydides asking why states go to war, and Madison answering him in the Federalist. Roman law hardening into Justinian’s code and then into half the legal systems on earth. A transmitted habit of putting power on trial, including the power doing the transmitting. Civilizational defenders call that self-correcting loop the tradition’s real signature, and it is not nothing.
Pull a different book and the road loses its edges. Aristotle survived the medieval centuries in Arabic, argued over in Baghdad and Cordoba before Paris had a university; the numerals European science runs on were worked out in India. Category critics trace the genealogy and find a wall built after the fact — Herodotus thought he was Greek, not Western,
and self-criticism was thriving in the Mohist and Mu’tazila schools long before Descartes. Selective inheritors want to keep every book and tear down the property line around them.
A fourth reader says all three are missing the engine. Christian inheritors, following Tom Holland’s argument that even Western secularism runs on Christian fuel, locate the distinctive thing not in Greek reason but in a stranger idea — that the last shall be first, that every person carries equal worth — which the Enlightenment then secularized and forgot it had borrowed.
The test
The crux is whether the coherence is real or retroactive. If Western
names a genuine lineage with its own internal logic, the concept does real work even with blurry borders. If the coherence was stitched on by curriculum committees who needed a story to justify a war, it is a brand wearing a toga. The fight reignites every time a university votes on its core requirements, a politician invokes Western values,
and a student asks why the reading begins in Athens and never stops in Baghdad or Pataliputra.
A course Columbia built in 1919 to justify a world war now frames how we teach 3,000 years of thought: Athens to Philadelphia in one straight line, skipping Baghdad, where Aristotle was kept alive. Is the West
a real inheritance, or a wall drawn around a shared library?
