For much of antiquity, the ๐๐ถ๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ช๐ข๐ฏ ๐๐ต๐ฉ๐ช๐ค๐ด (EE) was the ethical text โ the ๐๐ช๐ค๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ข๐ค๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฏ ๐๐ต๐ฉ๐ช๐ค๐ด (NE) nearly disappeared. When the NE resurfaced, its culmination in contemplative theoria fit far more neatly with Christian contemplative ideology than the EE's "mixed" account of the good life ever did.
That ๐น๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ ๐พ๐๐ถ๐ฒ๐๐น๐ ๐ต๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ผ ๐ฎ ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐น๐ผ๐ฝ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ฎ๐น ๐ท๐๐ฑ๐ด๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐: the EE got recast as the earlier, cruder draft, superseded by the more "mature" NE. ๐ฆ๐ถ๐ฟ ๐๐ป๐๐ต๐ผ๐ป๐ ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐ป๐ ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ฒ๐ป๐ด๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐๐ต๐ถ๐ ๐ฑ๐ผ๐ด๐บ๐ฎ head-on in 1978, using stylometric analysis of the shared "common books."
In a small, provisional study, ๐๐ฒ ๐๐ฟ๐ ๐๐ผ ๐๐ป๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ด๐น๐ฒ ๐๐ต๐ถ๐ ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฟ๐ผ๐ป๐ผ๐น๐ผ๐ด๐ a bit further โ using my developmental model, ๐๐ณ๐ข๐ฏ๐ด๐ค๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ต๐ข๐ญ ๐๐ญ๐ถ๐ณ๐ข๐ญ๐ช๐ด๐ฎ (TP), to look not at word choice or doctrine, but at the syntactic architecture of the sentences themselves.
Politics as a progressive stabilization of one syntactic organization โ while the Magna Moralia shows a genuinely different developmental trajectory, hinting at different authorship.
Still a hypothesis, not proof โ but a fresh angle on a very old debate.
