What Mamdani Said, What COPA Does, and What the Law Allows

The fight over Zohran Mamdani is loud, but the record is narrower than either side admits. His words on housing are real.

He has called for taking housing off the open market over time and for moving neglected buildings to nonprofits and tenants, so owners have reason to pay attention. Still, COPA is not a takeover law. It gives nonprofits a 90 day first look and a chance to match outside offers on certain distressed buildings, but it sets no price and forces no sale, and it was written years before he took office.

The rest falls apart under the facts. He is a citizen, explaining legal rights does not meet the Constitution's definition of treason, noncitizens cannot vote in New York, and city grocery stores will not check ID.

What's left is a real debate over cost, property rights and whether these tools will actually save housing, and that debate deserves facts, not slogans.
