Digital shelf tags and cameras are the third charge. Walmart is installing electronic price labels across about 4,600 U.S. stores by the end of 2026. The company says the tags replace paper stickers and that managers still approve price changes, often overnight. Unions and some lawmakers say the hardware can support fast price changes and, later, surveillance pricing.
Walmart has recent patents on automated markdowns and machine learning price recommendations. The company says those tools are for forecasting and discounts, not charging each shopper a private price. Shoppers do not have to guess in the dark. They can photograph the shelf tag and compare it at the register.
