When a mother kills her five year old, three year old, or eight month old child, she is killing a person who already exists independently outside her body. That child can breathe, eat, interact with others, receive care from someone other than the mother, and exist as a separate individual. If the mother is suffering from postpartum psychosis or another severe mental disorder, that may affect how we understand her actions and her legal responsibility. But it does not change the fact that a born child was killed.
