I have, from years of being a social worker, a belief in two things that are lacking in today's world: empathy and gratitude.
Empathy is more than the ability to feel sympathy for someone in a difficult situation. Feeling someone else's pain and not acting to help them is not empathy; it's walking through a zoo to see how bad someone else is doing. Empathy requires action, even if the only action is to offer to listen to the person in pain.
Gratitude is feeling thankful for what you have and for the people in your life. It's not the elimination of the desire to improve yourself but rather looking at where you are in this moment and being thankful that you are not where you were last week, last month, or last year. Gratitude is not about what you possess. It is about your mental state, your shelter, your family and friends, your companion animals, or whatever makes you happy in your darkest moment.
Empathy and gratitude require being present in the moment, aware of what you have, and maybe acknowledging where you want to be and what you have to do to get there.
Be more empathetic and grateful. It provides both a sense of purpose and peace of mind.
