New to national security

For those who aren't following, my pretty bad understanding is basically

1. Hegseth, chief of the US "Department of War" says they need models without constraints on how its used, as long as its legal. https://media.defense.gov/2026/Jan/12/2003855671/-1/-1/0/ARTIFICIAL-INTELLIGENCE-STRATEGY-FOR-THE-DEPARTMENT-OF-WAR.PDF

2. Later, "If not, will be designated as a supply chain risk - blacklisted for anyone who does business with the U.S. military (most major clients). https://www.axios.com/2026/02/16/anthropic-defense-department-relationship-hegseth

3. Anthropic says "two constraints: no mass surveillance and no autonomous weapons (at least not yet, bc the models aren't good enough)." These aren't yet covered by the law. https://www.anthropic.com/news/statement-department-of-war

4. Hegseth says "Not gonna work for us. Effective immediately, you're a "supply-chain-risk to national security." https://x.com/SecWar/status/2027507717469049070?s=20

5. Anthropic says "Bring it on. We're going to court; this isn't legal." https://www.anthropic.com/news/statement-comments-secretary-war

I think this is a huge deal. For democratic precedent and government overreach, or maybe for Silicon Valley overreach? (depending on who you read); for AI policy (AI companies and governments), for national security, for the fact that this shows us just how powerful these AI companies already are.

Also, this takes the limelight from the "Responsible Scaling Policy" changes which are also hotly debated, and pretty scary imo.

I know there are more nuanced perspectives, I'd love to hear them. On both/all sides.
