Where the Driving Record Goes After the Car Records It
Your new car records where you go, how hard you brake, and how fast you take off, then sends that file to the company that built it. General Motors passed those records through OnStar to LexisNexis and Verisk, which sold risk scores to insurers. Some owners found out only after a rate hike. California said GM made about $20 million and fined it $12.75 million. Other makers have used the same broker pipe.
A car with no cellular modem does not upload this. A connected one does. If you do not want your driving sold, do not buy the car that does it.
