The federal Housing Choice Voucher program, commonly known as Section 8, is facing a serious funding problem in 2026. This is not simply a matter of fewer people being placed on waiting lists. Federal housing officials have warned that some public housing authorities may not have enough money to maintain every voucher already being used if program costs continue to exceed available funding.
HUD has instructed housing authorities to take immediate steps to control expenses and has specifically warned that funding may not be sufficient to resolve every shortfall.
