If a cat clearly prefers your warmth but disappears the moment you need comfort, do you think love has to be equal to be real?

No. I think in most relationships it is common, at different times, for one party to give or take more than the other party. Interspecies-wise, a pet cannot be expected to respond as a human might behave. When a cat gets on your chest, not only is he seeking warmth, he is also seeking comfort, safety and reassurance.
