Russian Plague Scare: What We Actually Know

A frightening claim is spreading online that a “viral plague” has escaped from a Russian biological laboratory and caused widespread panic. The underlying incident is real, but the most alarming version of the story remains unproven.

There is also an important scientific correction to the headlines. Plague is not a virus. It is a bacterial disease caused by Yersinia pestis.

The responsible position is therefore neither dismissal nor panic. There is a legitimate public health investigation involving a dangerous pathogen research facility, and authorities should establish exactly what caused the woman’s illness and whether any occupational exposure occurred. At the same time, declaring that a plague pathogen has escaped from a Russian laboratory goes beyond the evidence currently available.
