TLDR; in the past two weeks the phone app caught up with the website, and a lot of small annoyances went away.
The mobile app caught up
Most of what you could only do at a desk, you can now do on your phone. iOS 1.0.1 is live in the App Store, and 1.0.0 is on Google Play.
- Bridges, on your profile and in groups. You can see them and request one without opening a laptop.
- Trust someone on a topic from the app, stake a vote, and place a trust bet from the post menu.
- Your profile got its tabs, and so did groups: the trust lens, decisions, money, and settings.
- Open asks, your introduction, the mirror, the questions map, collections and calibrate all work on the phone now.
- Crews arrived in full: who is in one, the people, the plans, polls, and who is free.
- Quests and badges, link cards, avatars throughout, and an action menu on every post and comment.
- You can verify your email in the app instead of being sent to a browser.
- Feed tabs and sort order, so the busiest screen is not stuck on one fixed view.
- A way back from every failed read. A screen that could not load used to be a dead end.
Reading and talking
- Comment threads have a layout choice. Pick indented or a tree view, whichever you find easier to follow.
- Posts get marked read when you open them, so what you have already seen stops competing for your attention.
- Muting someone now holds everywhere. A mute used to leave some notifications still coming through.
- You can read Discover through somebody else's trust, which is a fast way to see how different the same page looks from another position in the graph.
Getting around
- Topics is back in the sidebar. We slimmed the navigation down and took it out, and you told us that was wrong. It sits next to Groups again.
- Your pinned groups show their own images instead of a generic placeholder.
- If a group will not let you post, you now get a way in rather than a refusal with nothing to do about it.
- A failed post no longer traps what you wrote. The comment button used to stay dead after an error, so the only way out was to reload and lose the text.
- Your For You feed is calmer. A group's introduction post and its replies no longer compete with real discussion for a place in it.
Asking for help
The whole loop works now. You can write an ask straight from /asks, we route it to up to eight people your own network says can answer it, and when you mark it resolved that acknowledgement moves trust toward whoever helped. Until this week the only way to create an ask was through an import, and nothing happened when one was answered.
Events and email
- Host tools for your events, and a guest cap you can change or clear after the fact.
- Event links in the weekly digest work, and the broken ones already sent were repaired rather than left dead.
Ongoing improvements, bug fixes, etc.
- A quiet topic's Bridges tab is no longer blank. When a topic has too few trusted voices of its own to say anything, you see bridges chosen by UpTrust, labelled as ours so you know the difference.
- The site stopped hanging under load. On the 24th a slow background job could stall ordinary page loads for anyone. Background work and your requests no longer share the same lane.
- Nobody can register a username the site itself uses, so an account cannot be made to look official.
- Deleting your account now includes deleting uploaded images.
In testing (experimental)
These are off for most accounts and still changing, so you may not see them yet.
- Linking a blog or personal site got unstuck. A Substack could not be linked at all before, and when a claim failed the screen knew why and did not say. It says so now. There is a new guide on how to link a blog or site, including what a link can and cannot prove.
- Your X reading is rendered where you can read it, visible only to you.
- Proving a handle now counts. Trust you declared elsewhere becomes real in the graph once you prove the account is yours.
- Researchers can key on an ORCID iD, which connects a profile to the science corpus behind science.uptrusthq.com.
