I love today's alchemy post: “When a leader profits hugely while in power, what would actually change your mind about whether that is a problem?”
We're supposed to think on this together. My gut reaction is it would depend entirely on how that politician made that huge profit. From that statement I assume we could debate on what ways would be considered ethical and what ways wouldn't. It's pretty much all subjective when you get down to it.
The instance that would raise my most emphatic complaint is if (s)he used their place in power as the underlying catalyst in production. As the famous quote says, "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." written in 1887 no less by the English historian and politician Lord Acton in a letter to Bishop Mandell Creighton.
My question that arose from this post is that the quote states power tends to corrupt, but that was observed back in the 19th century. Now, in the 21st century, is it a given? Can anyone actually avoid becoming corrupt when (s)he has power?
