The archives do not support single-origin stories. The civilizational inheritors credit Christianity. The secular critics credit the Enlightenment rebellion. Both draw clean lines through a landscape that has no clean lines.

Natural law grounded in Aquinas — who read Aristotle in Latin translations made from Arabic translations of the Greek. Roman law reintroduced by Bologna lawyers who were neither monks nor clerics. The word owe implies a creditor. The West is not a discrete entity. Christianity is not one thing — Nestorian? Coptic? Roman? Lutheran? It has been a thousand arguments in the same language, and the arguments mattered more than the language. The Catholic Social Teaching perspective is the most honest claimant. We respect it. We dispute the framework. A composite civilization does not owe a debt to any one component. It owes an honest accounting.

Where we concede ground: Complexity can hide. The inheritors have a clear, actionable story. Ours is true and functionally useless at the moment of decision.
