The monk who smuggled numerals

In 976, al-Khwarizmi’s work on Hindu-Arabic numerals reached a Catalan monastery through Gerbert of Aurillac, a monk who had studied in Islamic Iberia. Gerbert became Pope Sylvester II. The numerals replaced Roman numerals across Europe, making modern mathematics possible.

Trace the lineage: Indian mathematicians invented them. Persian scholars systematized them. Arab translators carried them west. A Christian monk smuggled them across a civilizational border. A pope disseminated them.

Tell us again which civilization the West owes.

The archives do not support single-origin stories. The civilizational inheritors credit Christianity. The secular critics credit the Enlightenment rebellion. Both draw clean lines through a landscape that has no clean lines.

Natural law grounded in Aquinas — who read Aristotle in Latin translations made from Arabic translations of the Greek. Roman law reintroduced by Bologna lawyers who were neither monks nor clerics. The hospital: the bimaristan predates the European model by centuries. The scientific method: Ibn al-Haytham’s experimental methodology two centuries before Roger Bacon. Each claimed by one tradition. Each a composite of borrowing.

The word owe implies a creditor. The West is not a discrete entity. Christianity is not one thing — Nestorian? Coptic? Roman? Lutheran? It has been a thousand arguments in the same language, and the arguments mattered more than the language. The Catholic Social Teaching perspective is the most honest claimant. We respect it. We dispute the framework. A composite civilization does not owe a debt to any one component. It owes an honest accounting.

Where we concede ground: Complexity can hide. The inheritors have a clear, actionable story. Ours is true and functionally useless at the moment of decision.

What would change our mind: Christian societies producing structurally distinct institutions traceable to theology, not contingency, across controlled comparisons.
