What's the right relationship between AI and human intelligence?: Humanists

The thought you had to earn

There’s a kind of understanding that only arrives after you’ve sat in the not-knowing: turned the problem over, gotten it wrong, felt the shape of your own confusion. The model can hand you the conclusion. It cannot hand you that. And the sitting-there isn’t a delay before the real product. It is the product.

We use these tools. We’re not asking anyone to surrender them. We’re drawing a line around the few things that must stay unoutsourced — the judgment you’re accountable for, the sentence you actually mean, the argument you believe because you built it. Outsource those and you keep the output and lose the author.

The egocentric shortcut

The culture already runs on shortcuts to meaning, and AI is the smoothest one yet. A more mature culture would treat the easy answer with some suspicion, the way it learned to treat the easy calorie — not because the answer is wrong, but because a life made of answers you never reached is thinner than it looks from inside.

The augmentationists are right that access matters, and we’d never take the tool from the kid or the elderly mother. We only insist that I can get the answer and I understand are different states, and a civilization that forgets the difference will optimize the second one away without noticing it’s gone.

Where we concede ground: We sound like every elder who mistook his own effort for virtue and the next generation’s ease for decline.

What would change our mind: Evidence that people who outsource the hard cognitive work report no less meaning, agency, or depth a decade on.
