Marketed agricultural output dropped by more than 60 percent between the late 1990s and the end of the following decade, falling from about 4.2 million tons to roughly 1.6 million tons. Average annual maize production in the 2010s ran at about half the 1990s level.

White farmers are reappearing on the ground under a different legal arrangement. Around 400 now operate through joint ventures with the black holders of A2 leases, sharing net income in exchange for skills and working capital.
