Ukrainian emergency workers faced a fire tornado while
fighting blazes inside the Chernobyl exclusion zone.
The event took place on July 3 as part of larger fires that started earlier in the week. Officials said radiation levels stayed within normal limits during the incident. No major spikes reached areas outside the zone. The exclusion zone covers about two thousand six hundred square kilometers of mostly forested land. It was created after the 1986 nuclear disaster at the Chernobyl power plant. Heavy radiation contamination keeps the public out to this day.
