The FCC has always held the power to give or take licenses for radio TV and wireless services. That power can force a station or service offline by denying renewal or pulling the permit. They used it harder in 2026 by ordering early reviews on ABC stations years ahead of time. Disney sued and called it payback for content the top people disliked. The threat alone squeezes broadcasters hard even if full revocation stays rare.
The President once shaped the FCC mainly by picking commissioners and naming the chairman. He could not fire them just for disagreeing under old rules that required real cause. That setup limited direct orders. The agency was built as a multi member body with party balance and fixed terms.
That changed. An executive order now forces the FCC to clear rules and priorities with the White House. The Supreme Court ruled the President can remove commissioners without cause. The chairman said out loud the agency is not independent and they even dropped the word from their own description.
Congress keeps some oversight and courts can review moves but the old distance is gone. Appointments removal power and agenda control now put the sitting President much closer to the licensing decisions. The same body that holds the off switch on airwaves and related gear answers more directly to the executive than before.
