Living Neurons Forced Into Silicon Computer Simulations
These systems raise questions that ordinary computers never force. The tissue is alive. It adapts. It organizes activity in response to feedback that researchers describe in terms of predictability versus chaos. The published work uses the word sentience in a narrow technical sense: the ability to sense external states, update internal states, and produce actions that affect those external states.
The technical path is clear. Closed loop systems that couple living neurons to digital environments already exist, learn simple tasks faster than matched software controls in some metrics, and operate at power levels that silicon cannot currently match. Whether the next step places these cultures inside robotic bodies or expands them into larger computational arrays is no longer a question of possibility. It is a question of engineering schedule and market demand.
