The way you've written about it and set the historical context makes me think Carr was indeed on the cusp of the move from modern to postmodern, and this was an early instance of breaking the fourth wall, and kinda like a baby's first attempts at walking it wasn't pretty, and... We say "God is," and then we cease to speak, for in that knowledge words are meaningless.
