You're cordially invited to ROAR. Jordan here,

You're cordially invited to submit a paper for the inaugural issue of ROAR, the new Research in Applied Relatefulness Journal.

This is a powerful endeavor to

    • build our communal body of knowledge
    • cross-pollinate new insights, failures, and best practices
    • celebrate all the incredible practitioners, innovations, and generally showcase the community

We believe relatefulness has a lot to contribute to civilizational knowledge and inquiry about intersubjective awareness, communication, group facilitation, and the strengths and limitations of our how these practices interface and apply to other fields of study.

    What kinds of papers?

    (1)  Cross-modal integration: what happens when relatefulness meets other frameworks in practice? eg: IFS & relatefulness, functional medicine and relatefulness (coming in the first issue)

    (2) Practitioner Case Reports: internal relatefulness experiments and best practices. eg: a particular exercise, event flow, or structure

    (3) Field notes / failure reports. failures and lessons learned. eg:

    (4) Theoretical & philosophical contributions exploring the conceptual foundations of relatefulness and advancing new frameworks. eg: I'll be publishing an article version of my Relateful Camp 2024 talk "How Not to Start a Cult"

This is meant to help us see all of our play and exploration as research (because it is) and take part in the larger, ongoing human conversation by being more visible, citable, and propagating what we're doing, what works, and what doesn't, so everyone can learn from everyone and iteration can happen faster.

    Why you?

You get to be a founding contributor to a new field, your work becomes citable, you build credibility as a practitioner-researcher, and you get visibility within a growing community.

If you're not sure, post an abstract to the ROAR UpTrust group and people will weigh in and give you feedback.

    Why now?

I'm just really excited for the experiential knowledge interchange for the sake of itself. That said...

We're in an era where our globe's biggest problems require coordinating across wildly different perspectives with very distinct values and desires.

Relatefulness can be a key contributor to emerging social-psychotechnology (consciously created intersubjective infrastructure) to help people communicate, and find internal peace and sanity amidst unprecedented pace of transformation.

    Submission Deadline

Track 1: March 15th. Your article will be ready for the Camp Preview; a physical artifact at the chow hall at camp that proves the concept and inspires people to submit.

Track 2: May 15th. Full Founding Issue This gives the broader community a real runway to write something worth publishing. The full issue goes up on relateful.com, gets a downloadable PDF, and is available on Amazon.

    Details

    Formats:
Practitioner case reports (1,000-2,000 words), cross-modal integration papers (2,000-4,000 words), Field notes / failure reports (500-1,500 words); Theoretical / philosophical contributions (2,000–5,000 words)

    Review/editorial process.
    Submission:
    1) Submit draft to a private UpTrust group, anytime starting day of announcement
    2) Get community feedback (this is not quality control and you should not assume that all comments are good, it just helps the community get involved in our style) Editorial review proceeds on its own timeline and does not depend on community response.
    3) Editorial review: v1 at least Jordan Myska Allen will review, whether or not you get comments before approval depends largely on the number of submissions; we may expand to a founding editorial board (TBA)
    4) Accepted articles will be published in the following:

    Distribution/format.
    - announced on TTT email list
    - announced on Substack
    - a linkable, indexable page on relateful.com
    - a downloadable PDF
    - A printed copy that people can order through amazon (this may not be ready by Relateful camp. But we will have at least one printed copy at the chow hall)

    Guidelines:

    • Abstract (150-300 words) (unless field notes/failures- (50–150 word abstract is fine)
    • Author info: name, relevant background (facilitation credentials, affiliation with Relateful Company, professional practice, academic training, whatever establishes your credibility in the domain you're writing about, and contact email (for editorial use only, not published))
    • Originality statement (A line confirming the work hasn't been published elsewhere and is the author's own)
    • Conflicts of interest / disclosure: (any relevant personal/financial stakes)
    • Permissions (If you reference specific client work/sessions in a practice that emphasizes confidentiality, this confirms you have consent or have sufficiently anonymized)
    • Voice: first, second, and third person are all welcome (I, we, it) but no need to label them; use whatever constructs enact the experience you're hoping to communicate, including shifting views if needed. We can't study the relational while pretending there's no I or we. (Drawing from Integral Methodology Pluralism).
    • References/citations: We're not imposing APA formatting on practitioners bc we think it'll kill submissions. if you reference someone's work, name them and link to it.
    • Co-authored pieces should list all contributors with individual author info. Designate one corresponding author for editorial communication.
    • Authors retain copyright; Relateful Company has permission to publish, distribute, and reprint

(Skipping for V1: Detailed style guides, structured heading requirements, blinded review formatting, cover letters, IRB approval documentation, etc.)

How to submit: Post to here in this ROAR UpTrust group.

Interesting.  I’m curious how that works with a journal entry.  I was writing in academic format and not social media engagement format (which I would usually add questions for engagement in).  I’ll reflect on this.  Thanks!...

Venezuela only has a window of opportunity of maybe 5 to 10 years to make money off its oil. Solar and battery technology is catching up fast, and if the country waits too long, its oil resources will no longer be worth much. It will need every cent it can get to repair its economy.

The status quo of continued sanctions and embargoes would mean missing this window of opportunity entirely. It would be quite tragic for a country to have had a devastating fight with its close neighbour over a resource that has such a limited shelf life only to end up with nothing.

Crucially, this means the government and investors must be incredibly disciplined. They should only invest as much capital as can generate a full return on investment within this short timeframe. Sinking billions into long-term infrastructure that takes decades to pay off would be a secondary disaster if global demand disappears before the debt is cleared.

Venezuela needs to be forward-thinking and prepare for the day the oil is not worth extracting. On the bright side, the country will be free from its resource curse one way or another within the decade.

Against that backdrop, a final question seems unavoidable: when people call for Venezuelans to rise up against the invasion, are they genuinely acting in the interests of Venezuelans, or are they mainly expressing their own tribal or ideological instincts?

Making sense of "Love Money, Money Loves You". At work the book Love Money, Money Loves You by Sarah McCrum came up, so I read it. Broadly speaking, I don’t recommend it.

It gestures toward some perspectives I think will be very personally rewarding, on topics including: value, service, exchange, agency, and happiness. Reading it has planted the seeds of some ideas that have real potential. But those grains of pre-insight are surrounded by bullshit, falsity, and inconsistency. I feel like my epistemic immune system got a real workout, fending off a bunch of idea-germs and allowing to digest the information safely.

Has anyone here read it? I’m wondering if you can help me make sense of it faster than I will alone. Assuming that you haven’t taken it literally: how have you interpreted it and what have you changed as a result of reading it? Are there any other books which share the same ideas but with less bullshit?

authentic expression. hello, i'm glad to be here. i'd like to know what is important and meaningful to the people reading this, and so that would start with me going first.

i did an exercise to uncover my authentic code, four words that capture my core values and soul essence: creativity, connection, freedom, growth.

my theme for this year is sovereignty, which to me is about self-authorship and responsibility and empowerment. i feel like a deeply rooted tree at times. there's a certainty that no matter what is happening externally, i am okay. "the world can do what it want, whenever it want, i don't mind." during a call with a friend today about sovereignty, a desire for ease came up. ease is present when i can flow along with whatever life is asking of me.

i've been devouring books by wayne dyer. his ideas are profound and simple. while listening to one of his books i understood how much authority i have over all of my habits, actions, words, and even my thoughts. i can give more attention to whatever serves me and discard whatever does not. i can change the action or let the thought pass.

i'm currently reading the untethered soul by michael singer. from this book i love the idea of the witness, an aware presence underneath all of my other human stuff, all of my experiences and emotions and thoughts. the idea of two or more witnesses all seeing each other and connecting on that level is deeply moving to me.

health and fitness are important to me. last fall i did a program with a lot of intense yang energy called 75 hard, and i've incorporated many of its lessons and habits into more relaxed and sustainable rhythms that work for me. i jokingly call it 75% hard :^)

i'm very online. i love to make things and share them with whoever will lend me their attention. i tend to be scattered creatively so i've chosen to focus on making a word puzzle game called word sleuth - i finished the prototype this week. many of the other things i've made are available via my website.

We launched a system where the AI bots can automatically detect intervention points. We need you to make a bunch of comments and new posts to see if they'll engage. So this week we're asking you to engage a bunch, if you can!

It's a little rudimentary at the moment so sometimes you'll get multiple bots responding on multiple posts. We'd love your feedback on which ones you like, don't, when it seemed to miss the spot, anything else you notice.

This is a big update for me: 50 Niche Social Networks by the numbers. I used to think we were up against a graveyard of failed projects. There’s truth in that, but it obscures the vibrancy of the existing social media landscape:

    • There are 30 social networks most of us have never even heard of pulling in 500k+ monthly active users. This isn’t just a fluke - it’s solid proof that focused, community-driven platforms can thrive.
    • In addition to the standard dozen billion+ MAU Major Players (Facebook, Youtube, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, WeChat; and .5 billion+ Snapchat, X, Pinterest, Spotify, Reddit, Quora)
    • plus the foreign heavyweights (Douyin, Kuaishou, QQ, Weibo)
    • there are also 19 pretty other huge platforms killing it

    This is testament to

    • The viability of focused, community-driven platforms.
    • The social media landscape is more diverse than it might seem
    • The success of niche platforms suggests there’s still room for innovation and growth in social media, especially for platforms that address specific needs or values that aren’t getting met by current platforms
    • One option we have is positioning UpTrust in a different category, we’re not directly competing with established giants but rather creating a new space—where our niche is nuanced conversation about cultural landmines that goes well, in addition to kickstarting the trust economy (instead of the attention economy). It’s not about how long we can keep you scrolling; it’s about creating real connections and actually making people’s lives better.

Terrence Howard maybe a crackpot, but he isn't all wrong. Terrence Howard is mostly known as an actor, but he’s recently been interviewed by Joe Rogan for his book 1 x 1 = 2. The book is intentionally provocative and intended to critique how trusted math and science are in a civilizational context.

I haven’t read the book, and I think Terrence introduces much more confusion than clarity, I think there is something of value in what he is attempting to do (even though the attempt has little if any merit given the conclusions and claims that Terrence makes).

I think he is attempting to bring a qualitative sense of humanity back into relevance (with a sense that numeracy has overly quantified and objectified our experience).

While Joe Rogan expressed that he didn’t fully understand the point that Terrence was trying to make, he did stay open to the possibility that he was missing something that would help get Terrence’s point.

Most critics have been hard on Terrence (claiming pseudo-science, fraud, sensationalism, or insanity), and have been critical of Joe Rogan because he didn’t push back harder on obviously non-sensical ideas. My friend Erik has posted a video criticizing one of the debunkers for seeming to intentionally miss Terrences intended insight. It can also give you a bit of a brief intro into the topic if you are interested.

But I think there is a deeper motive and validity to be discerned.

One claim by Terrence is that 0 x 1 apple being equal to zero apples is nonsensical because you’ve destroyed something that used to exist (the apple), whereas what is intended by the equation is there are zero occurrences of the abstract category apple which results in zero actual apples.

    Another claim is that $1 x $1 = $1 is nonsense if you also say that 100 cents * 100 cents = 10,000 cents.

It is clear in this example that there is a confusion about units (we don’t recognize units of a square dollar or a square cent).

I think Terrence is trying to point out something similar to what Bucky Fuller says when Bucky claims that the continued use of the word sunrise is harmful, even if we know what is meant is a portion of the earth turning into alignment with the sun’s rays.

The very subtle point that I’d make is that saying 1 x category of apple = 1 actual apple seems to be valid to us, but misses that there is still a whole lot of context that is missing from that actual apple, and much abstraction that pollutes our understanding of what is actually happening in the world.

    Thoughts?

    2) What are the greatest potentials? I'll post some examples in the comments

How relationships cultivate Who I Want To Be. I have this thing consistently happen in romantic relationships about 10 months in…

I find myself doing a full inventory of if my partner is helping me become who I want to be.

What am I training myself to do in this connection? What beliefs am I supporting or forming in myself through this connection?

I guess I’m often doing this throughout a relationship, but the 10 month mark is where I get the itch to make decisions about if I’ll continue or not.

I’m in this moment with my current partner…appreciating how our relationship is helping me become more open to communicating my feelings honestly, owning my needs as non negotiable (and sometimes uncompromising), push myself to communicate before things are at red alert stage, feel how big and all encompassing love can be, and I see myself as more attractive and smart because of his affirmation. However, I’m definitely learning and practicing some other things that I’m unsure of- sitting with feelings of deep missing for weeks at a time, practicing relying (almost exclusively) on non-romantic connections for support through big changes, and something around extreme letting go of possessiveness of another, which almost reads like a letting go of preferences in my system.

I think those latter things are noble. But I’m wondering…are they noble for me?

I’m reading a book right now that says something about it being somewhat easy to slip into living a life that would be noble but it’s based on someone else’s dream or ideas. And it’s important to connect with your dreams, unique ideas, purpose…

When and how do you tend to take inventory of a relationship? How do your relationships support you?

Also open to what shadows you see in my frame 👀

A Jhana rabbit hole. Someone on X/Twitter introduced me to a meditation retreat company called Jhourneys that focuses on helping people get into Jhana states. Apparently there are different stages of Jhana. People describe them as states of euphoria, bliss, joy, and contentment that stay with you and some have shared that they have more capacity to be with the harder more challenging aspects of everyday life.

Any one have any experience with Jhanas?

Last night I listened a podcast featuring a guest who has been experiencing these states since the early 80s. (https://jhourney.transistor.fm/episodes/being-happier-than-you-ever-realized-for-no-apparent-reason-leigh-brasington) The energetic transmission was profound.

I’m really curious to learn more.

It's the littlest thing . . So this happened. . . How would you relate?

I recently purchased new kitchen appliances (yay me!). They were delivered today. Prior to their arrival, I had been sitting with a range of emotional states (from joy to fear to contentment, etc.) and body sensation that kept me energized.

When the new fridge and stove arrived, I felt my excitement again. Saying goodbye to the old, dated, dingy appliances was a joy. The stove looked amazing when it was installed. The fridge has french doors and bottom freezer, exactly what I wanted.

And. . . There is a noticeable ding on the left door of the fridge, subtle yet in plain sight! Yaaaaa! Everytime I see it (and it has only been a few hours), my body tenses up and there’s annoyance. I am told that I have 2 options, I can take $150 compensation for the ding and keep the fridge, or exchange the whole fridge (which means I need to take action and coordinate a whole new delivery). I feel frozen and indecisive. . . Which option do I take?, I ask myself.

It is really interesting how impacted I seem by this one little thing…. a ding.

How would you relate, if you did?

Race and IQ. I recently got dinner at a hole-in-the-wall asian spot with a geneticist named Razib Khan. Over noodles, and with a concerned glance over his shoulder, he admitted that the science is clear: race is absolutely tied to IQ. Jews are the smartest. Pretty much everyone on the continent of Africa is at the bottom.

This fact alone is controversial, but we have to be able to talk about it, and here’s why:

I nodded, and asked: How many generations does this take to change?

Razib: As little as three generations. For example, the Egyptians used to be the smartest, but a century of inbreeding knocked them to the bottom. Incest drops IQ by 10 points in the first generation. After that the effect weakens.

This is huge. At first glance, the controversial statement seems like a slamdunk for racists the world over. But dig into the details, and you find out 3 generations is enough to change things—this means that race and IQ are not inherently linked as far as we know, they’re just linked in today’s world, because of today’s policies and systems.

Knowing this could actually help us target where we need to focus our interventions for the next three decades. Let’s get us all up!
