May I see Your ID Please. AT the top,l et me say I pride myself as being what I call a common sense Centrist, I think good governance is good governance simple as that.  I think Its Good for Gvt to defend our country, pave our roads, help people recover from disaster, provide Limited help to people who need ot be lifted out of poverty. You get the picture.  NOT good for GVT; tell me what books I can read, installing religious beliefs in schools,  basically stay out of my Beliefs.

Hopefully that qualifies me as a reasonable common sense human.

Having said that, Lets try this.

Some form of Identification requirement for Voting is not such a horribe Idea.

    Some support for my Argument.

If I want to FLY, I must provide a Gvt issued ID

If I want to Operate a Motor Vehicle- I MUST have the GVT Issued License.

If I want to go to the library I need a "card" to do So.

If I buy Tickets for a Show and go to Willcall to get the tix. I need to Provide ID.

The Left says that VOTER ID would discourage Some from Voting.  The Rght says that attitude Proves that the Democrat leaders encourage Voter Fraud AND those fraudulent voters ALWAYS vote Democratic.  There is NO evidence tthat actually Happens in any organized way.  And, Who are these people that want to Vote Illegally, How many of them are out there.  Enough to change the outcome of elections?  Im a cynic on that Idea.

Im Saying it's time to Put this debate to bed.  Provide a State Issued Voter ID.

In NJ The Motor Vehicle Comission Issues the "REAL ID". It has deep proof of who I am.  If the GVT trusts that and will let me get on a Plane, It seems to me that should Qualify as a way to verify I have a verified way to Vote.

https://www.ncsl.org/elections-and-campaigns/voter-id - looks like in 2012, strict voter ID laws were voted against by the people.....sounds like it needs to be put back on the ballot

Why does it have to be blue vs. red? Whatever happened to meeting in the middle on political issues? I am old enough to remember when American politicians were generally more moderate, not so partisan and seemingly unwilling to compromise as they have been recently. "Working across the aisle" sounds great in speeches but it is not being practiced by a majority of elected lawmakers and other officials. Why can't we have a legitimate third party that has some real support and influence. I believe that a majority of Americans would place themselves in the middle third of the political spectrum and we are not being represented accordingly.

Meeting in the middle doesn't win elections and news coverage doesn't focus on the many passed laws that actually are bipartisan. A google search shows 70% of passed laws had a Democrat and Republic co-sponsor of the bill....

Supporting bipartisan Bromance? I think I’m starting to hope that JD and Tim can embrace and mutiny on their respective Presidential candidates.

I like that we’re getting deeper into the issues and realizing it’s not a simple issue solved by rhetoric. I like the civility even though the problems are heartbreaking and terrifying.

Can we have these guys as the presidential candidates instead?

    Walz closed strong

Oh yeah, Walz closed strong on the election denial – that was the hardest hitting moment of the debate for me.

    Election result respecting

This is a spicy one. I think this is one where Trump needs to take more responsibility in how he talks about election legitimacy.

Did he lose the 2020 election? STRONG.

fact checking: fentanyl situation. how are folks receiving Vance’s claim that Kamala Harris’ border policy allowed more fentanyl into the country?

i don’t know much about this topic

    brianSA•...
I am questioning the truth of that. It seems to me that Democrats started saying it was invented by Republicans when it was no longer useful to have her have that label because of the embarrasing performance....

    "Donald had 4 years" / "Biden+Harris had 4 years"

There’s a funny/weird symmetry here that normally happens when it’s two fresh candidates. I don’t know what to make of it but when either side tries to bring up these records it feels empty…

    VP debate

God, it’s so painful to watch these debates. All I hear is vote for my party, we’re the best and they suck! No, vote for MY party, WE’RE the best and THEY suck!

What do you need from a candidate to convince you to vote for them? For me by far the most important thing is geopolitics. Given that America is the world police and is largely responsible for keeping world maritime trade routes open (on which the entire world economy rests - including the US economy), it is shocking to me how much people focus on internal things like crime, abortion, gun control (all of which are very important, but pale in comparison to the whole planet imo).

I think America has done a good job of leading the world in the last 70 years despite also messing up many times, I struggle to think of any other power that could have done better. I’m very set on voting for Harris, but I hope to find out in this debate that she and her VP are better than I expect, and hopefully not worse than I expect.

This will clearly indicate my voting preference, most important for me are candidates that believe in and support democratic institutions.

Trump is going to be President (again). The assassination attempt is definitely helping propel Trump to the presidency (aka the belief that God is ordaining Trump to be president, thus saved him from harm), though Elon Musk’s immediate endorsement after the assassination attempt (and $45 mil per month committed pledge to his election) has probably done even more to cement this election than the bullet. I was totally missing the tech community’s massive upset over Biden admin’s stance on AI regulation and crackdowns on acquisitions by big tech. Somehow, I thought everyone was alarmed about AI. It’s much more complex than I realized.

Both candidates are too fucking old to be president. One is a crazy and too old. The other is selfish and even more too old.

Eyes opened, looking at four years of dramatic course correction (is that the right word…correction?) I believe life is trustable and I wonder if I’ll be alive to see the good that will come from this huge swing. Feeling a need to distance myself, emotionally, get out a bowl of popcorn, to watch the show, trusting something…

Loved reading this, Val. Looks like it might be more of a dead heat now, with Kamala instead of Biden. But I still think Trump is likely to win. And I honestly don’t know how I feel about that. 8 years ago, I would have been appalled. Now, it seems far more complex....
