What's public and what's private

Who can see your posts, votes, and scores.

Knowing what others can see helps you speak freely where it's safe and hold back where it matters. Here's the plain version.

What's public

  • Your posts and comments on open conversations can be read by anyone, even people without an account.
  • Your profile shows your display name, picture, and public activity. See your profile.
  • How you voted can show. When someone opens the trust score details on a post or comment, they see a list of who voted and whether each person voted up or down.

What's private

  • Your scores are yours. The trust scores you see are figured out just for you, based on who you trust. Nobody else sees your view of a score. See how trust works.
  • Direct messages stay between you and the other person. See direct messages.
  • Your Mirror is a private space only you can see.
  • Private groups keep their posts inside the group. See join a group.

Tip

Before you vote on a public post, remember others can see that you voted and which way. If you'd rather keep an opinion to yourself, a direct message is the private option.
